7 Lucrative Fields That Don't Require an Advanced Degree

We all have to work our way up the corporate ladder, and that typically means paying dues in a low-paying, entry-level gig. But if you cringe at the idea of working for peanuts, don't panic -- you don't need an M.D., J.D., or Ph.D. after your name to command a sizeable salary on day one. In these lucrative fields, even the rookies collect a healthy paycheck.
Web Designer

What it is: Can't stop surfing your favorite social networking site or online store? Thank the company's Web designer. Designers are responsible for mapping, coding, and maintaining sites for their clients. The position requires exhaustive technological know-how earned oftentimes from a Web design degree program and a creative eye -- and if you have both, the payout is rewarding.

What it pays: According to Salary.com, the average base salary for an entry-level designer is $50,555.

Physician Assistant

What it is: Physician assistants (PAs) are trained to offer diagnostic and preventative care under the supervision of doctors. Admission into a PA program requires two years of college and takes two years to complete; it's a smart alternative for those who want to pursue medicine but can't stomach the time commitment or hefty tuition needed to complete medical school.

What it pays: According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the median income for first-year physician assistants is $69,517; that's nearly half the starting salary for a fully licensed internal medicine specialist.

Computer Software Engineer

What it is: Software engineers use their fluency in programming languages like C++ and Java to build new applications for consumers and clients. They may be hired to design a company's accounting software or a new virtual game. A bachelor's degree in a computing field is needed to qualify for the most lucrative job opportunities.

What it pays: Grads with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering can expect to start at $56,201, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Computer science majors command a slightly lower salary but still break the $50K mark.

Petroleum Engineer

What it is: Petroleum engineers search for oil and gas reservoirs, determine the best method for extraction, and design the equipment needed for drilling and production. Most jobs are based in petroleum-rich areas like Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alaska, and California.

What it pays: Petroleum engineers enjoy a high starting salary -- $60,718 for new grads -- in an already lucrative field. If drilling for black gold isn't your thing, those with chemical, nuclear, mechanical, and industrial engineering degrees all earn in the high $50K range.

Actuary

What it is: Actuaries are paid to tell others when to worry -- in other words, they use their mathematical wizardry to assess risks and minimize potential losses. Most actuaries work for insurance companies, where they estimate the potential cost of claims and calculate a profitable premium. Others work in the finance industry, where they might design pension plans or manage government programs like Social Security.

What it pays: Salary is one thing actuaries don't have to worry about -- those with a bachelor's degree can expect to start at $53,754, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Economist

What it is: Think you can predict the financial future? Your foresight could lead to a fat paycheck, because economics majors can land profitable positions in the business field. Economists scour data and analyze statistics in order to identify consumer trends -- and forecast the best way to cash in on them. Microeconomists may help individual companies maximize their profits; macroeconomists study the broader picture, including trends in unemployment, inflation, and investment.

What it pays: According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, economists employed in business and managerial positions bring in an average starting salary of $53,449.

Seven Foods Fight Cancer

For now at least, there's no one to keep us from eating to beat disease, even if that disease is a multi-headed monster like cancer. But unlike prescription cancer drugs, most of which are designed to treat the illness, pharmaceutical foods are here to help prevent it.
We've rounded up the newest of these nutritional standouts, along with strategies for slipping them into your diet. And while none of the lucky seven that follow are FDA-approved, your body will be Men's Health-improved after you eat them.

Curry up
The right spice can make the meal—and block the tumor. That's what University of Illinois researchers discovered when they pitted turmeric against 19 different strains of H. pylori, the ulcer-inducing bacterium that's been linked to colon and gastric cancers. In every case, turmeric took the teeth out of H. pylori.
"Turmeric didn't necessarily reduce the bacterial load," says Gail Mahady, Ph.D., the study's lead author. "What it did was reduce the chronic inflammation caused by H. pylori. And it's this inflammation that has been associated with the development of cancer."
The best way to increase your intake of turmeric? Eat Indian food. Specifically, try dining on curry, which is rich in turmeric and often contains additional cancer squashers, such as garlic and onions.
Another option: Slather extra mustard on all your sandwiches; the bright yellow variety is loaded with turmeric.

Gill or be killed
Shark cartilage won't ward off cancer, but a shark's diet might. A recently completed 12-year Harvard study of nearly 48,000 men determined that those who ate fish more than three times a week were 40 percent less likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those who hit the surf only twice a month.
It's those amazing omega-3s again, though they don't deserve all the credit. "Fish also contains vitamin A and vitamin D, which may help prevent prostate cancer," says Michael F. Leitzmann, M.D., a coauthor of the study.
That's why it may be better to skip supplements and stick with actual fish. Salmon, mackerel, and herring have the best balance of omega-3s, vitamin A, and vitamin D.
Note: Don't wait until the weekend to go fishing, says Dr. Leitzmann. "Space your fish consumption out over the week so you consume a steady supply of these compounds."

Add zest to life
Fresh-squeezed OJ contains all the health benefits of oranges except one: the cancer protection in the peel. People who regularly consume citrus zest reduce their risk of squamous-cell skin cancer by 30 percent, according to a recent University of Arizona study. Even lab rats live longer on the stuff; animal studies suggest that citrus zest can actually shrink existing tumors.
Turns out the oils in the peels of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit contain powerful compounds that stimulate the body's production of a detoxifying enzyme, explains study author Iman Hakim, M.D., Ph.D., who says the results had an impact on her research group. "Several people around here started chewing on citrus peels," she says.
Another option: Grate the colored portion of the peel and add the pile of zest (at least a tablespoonful) to soups, salads, and salsa, or sprinkle it on chicken and fish.

Get white hot
Green tea grabs all the headlines as a tumor-taming brew, but the white kind surpasses it at preventing colon cancer. When researchers at Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute tested the two teas' abilities to block colon-polyp growth, the white tea beverage was about 10 percent more effective. In fact, it stopped polyps as effectively as sulindac, a powerful anti-inflammatory drug.
And while prescription anti-inflammatories can cause internal bleeding and ulcers, "tea is pretty much guaranteed not to cause side effects," says Gayle Orner, Ph.D., the study's lead author. The study used Exotica white tea (80 tea bags for $20 at stashtea.com); 3 cups a day may be enough to cut your cancer risk.

Find your whey
Not since lycopene landed in our lives has there been a more promising prostate-cancer-fighting nutrient than whey protein. In a recent Ohio State University study, researchers treated human prostate cells with whey protein and then measured the cells' levels of a natural cancer-blocking compound called glutathione.
The finding: Glutathione levels rose by a remarkable 64 percent. "Whey is a great source of the amino acid cysteine, and cysteine can become glutathione in the body," explains Rosemary L. Walzem, R.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Nutrition, Health, and Food Genomics at Texas A&M University.
One of the best sources of whey is yogurt; a lot of the protein is in the clear liquid on top, so don't pour it off. You can also pick up powdered whey-protein isolate—vanilla-flavored—and add it to instant oatmeal.

Berry yourself alive
Make every day Thanksgiving and you could slash your risk of several different cancers. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have confirmed that cranberries contain a trove of tumor-blocking compounds, including phenolic acids, glycosides, and anthocyanins.
These phytochemicals are effective at preventing cancer down below—in the colon and prostate—as well as up top—on the head and neck. "They force cancer cells to die or they inhibit their unregulated growth," says David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., a coauthor of the study.
To hit your daily cran quota, down a small glass of cranberry juice (the type that lists at least 27 percent juice on the label) at breakfast and snack on Craisins (sweetened dried cranberries) throughout the day.

Pledge to the gamma frat
The nutrient with the coolest name—gamma tocopherol—may also be the one with the fastest draw in a showdown with cancer. When Purdue University researchers pitted this form of vitamin E against prostate- and lung-cancer cells, they discovered that it was able to stop the cells in their microscopic tracks.
What's more, gamma tocopherol helped kill existing tumor cells without hurting healthy cells, says Qing Jiang, Ph.D., the study's lead author.
But what about the research showing that vitamin E supplements are worthless, and perhaps even dangerous? Doesn't apply to gamma tocopherol, since it isn't included in most E supplements.
Instead, you'll find it in sesame oil, which you can sub for other cooking oils or sprinkle over salads. Or, if you want a source you can sink your teeth into, munch on walnuts.

Men's Health-Why Men Fall Asleep After Sex

Seven things most men don’t know about their sexual health:

Sex and sleep

According to Dr. Billy Goldberg, co-author of Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Sex?, there is little direct evidence explaining why men fall asleep. However, the chemicals oxytocin, prolactin, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) and other hormones all contribute to “that roll-over-and-snore feeling” because they facilitate sleep.

“A man’s body chemistry changes after orgasm. The biochemical prolactin is released, physically altering his body and making him very tired,” says Dr. David McKenzie, a sex therapist in Vancouver, Canada.

Further, exertion during sex and after climax depletes the muscles of energy-producing glycogen, which leads to sleepiness. Since men have more muscle mass than women, they’re generally sleepier after sex.

Men’s libido goes up and down

Think PMS is only for women? Think again. Your monthly peaks and valleys are triggered by changes in testosterone that affect your mood, libido, energy level, beard growth and sperm count.

According to research by naturopathic physician Dr. Marcus Laux, men have more energy, a greater sense of well being, lower body weight and less need for sleep during the peak of their cycle. The valleys bring apathy, indifference and the tendency to magnify small problems into big ones.

“If you keep track of your personal cycles, whether it’s shifts in energy levels, mood or sex drive, you can anticipate changes,” says Laux. “Then, you can take advantage of the times you’re at your prime and better cope when you’re not feeling your best.”

Your penis is a barometer of overall health

Dr. Mehmet Oz, co-author of You: The Owner’s Manual, calls it your “dipstick” because it reveals the health of your other body parts. The physical mechanisms that send blood to your brain, heart and kidneys also inflate your penis. If it’s not standing tall, you may have arterial problems.

“A man’s lack of interest in sex is a big red flag that something is out of balance. Up to 25% of men have a low-to-no sex drive,” says Dr. Laux. “It could be even higher, as men don't talk about low libido.”

The possible causes of restricted blood flow include diabetes, endocrine disorders, heart and vascular problems or kidney diseases. “But,” says Laux, “don't rule out fatigue, psychological factors, relationship issues, poor nutrition, insomnia or lack of exercise.”

Disrupted sleep decreases erections

If you’re struggling with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), you’re at risk for sexual dysfunction. OSA is a sleep disorder that affects 18 million Americans—many of whom go undiagnosed—and causes sufferers to stop breathing dozens of times per hour.

OSA disrupts rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, which is when men routinely experience erections. Decreased REM sleep means fewer REM erections, which affects sexual health. “It’s possible that men need to experience REM erections in order to maintain optimal sexual functioning,” says Dr. Charles Atwood, associate director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Sleep Medicine Center.

“If you have erectile dysfunction, you should get tested for OSA,” he advises. “Men who are diagnosed and treated for OSA often see an improvement in sexual functioning.”

Eco-friendly transportation could damage your testicles

Whether you’re bicycling to reduce your carbon footprint, save money on gas or get fit, make sure you’re cushioned properly. Cycling doesn’t cause male infertility, but it can lead to testicular damage, impaired sperm functioning and erectile problems. Urological surgeon Vinod Nargund from St. Bartholomew’s and Homerton Hospitals in London found that mountain bikers are more affected than road cyclists.

Dr. Nargund lists the potential problems of prolonged cycling: abrasions, chafing, damaged hair follicles and bruising. Sweating may cause skin problems and a general soreness.

Symptoms to watch for include genital numbness, erection problems and skin irritations. To stay healthy, wear shorts with protective padding. Make sure your seat is also padded, and adjust its position so it doesn’t put pressure on your groin.

Varicocele can cause male infertility

Infertility affects one in six couples, and male factors contribute to at least half of all cases. According to the Center of Reproductive Medicine at Cornell University, the most common identifiable cause of male infertility is varicocele, or enlarged veins in the scrotum. Another possibility is a blockage in the reproductive tract.

Simply being older also affects your fertility. Recent research from the Eylau Centre for Assisted Reproduction in France shows a connection between men over age 35, lower pregnancy rates and higher miscarriage rates. Keep your sperm strong by eating nutritiously, exercising regularly and decreasing your stress level.

Big news

An average penis length of five erect and three flaccid inches is normal for men—that’s significantly smaller than what most men think is normal.

“Generally, every man (and woman) believes the ultimate in sexiness and masculinity is to have a larger-than-average penis,” says sexologist Dr. Trina Read. “The fact is, men with large penises often find it difficult to find a partner who is comfortable having intercourse and giving oral sex.”

During intercourse, penis size has little to do with partner satisfaction. Most of the sensitive nerve endings are concentrated close to a woman’s vaginal opening—which means a penis of any size can be highly pleasurable.

“What most women really want is technique,” says Dr. Read. The upside? A man who masters his technique in bed may get away with falling asleep right after sex.

McCurry Win the Battle Against McDonald

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - A small Malaysian restaurant is once again proudly trading as "McCurry", after its unlikely victory in an eight-year legal battle with US fast food giant McDonald's.

With its trays of fragrant tandoori chicken and fish masala, and customers at formica tables cooled by fans turning lazily overhead, the business is difficult to confuse with McDonald's and its racks of burgers.

"You can't have fries with that but we do have a very good potato curry," owner AMSP. Suppiah, 55, says with a laugh.

But Suppiah and his wife Kanageswary spent eight years battling in the courts for the right to retain the name of the business, pursued by McDonald's lawyers who forced them to operate as "M Curry" for several years.

"We were surprised that a giant like McDonald's would want to take action against us even though there was nothing in common between us and them," Suppiah said.

"We decided to appeal because we felt we were right and the court of appeal agreed with us this week," he said after a Malaysian court ruled the business had not infringed on the McDonald's trademark by using the prefix "Mc".

To the delight of the local press which has covered the landmark case closely, Suppiah then took a tall ladder to climb to the brightly coloured signboard and reinstate the controversial "c".

Tucking into a breakfast of "dosai" or Indian pancakes, Suppiah says he never expected to win the battle against the international food giant.

"There were times when we almost gave up hope because who would have imagined that we could win against such a big company with so much money and resources at their disposal," he said.

The mom and pop operation is one of numerous simple restaurants serving up Indian fare in this multicultural country, which is dominated by Muslim Malays but also home to ethnic Indian and Chinese communities.

Suppiah, a former accountant, says his troubles began when he set up the restaurant in 1999, shortening the name Malaysian Chicken Curry Restaurant to the McCurry restaurant.

"But within a year, I began receiving letters from McDonald's urging me to change the name and threatening legal action."

Unable to resolve the impasse, McDonald's sued Suppiah and a Malaysian High Court agreed with the hamburger chain in 2006, forcing Suppiah to remove the prefix from his signs and business.

Kanageswary says she is thrilled with the legal U-turn, but adds the victory has come at a cost.

"We faced a lot of mental anguish and embarrassment over the issue and for eight years our business has been in limbo because no one wants to invest in a company facing litigation and so we have not been able to make any improvements to the restaurant," she said.

"Hopefully, we can move on now."

However, the Suppiahs' lawyer Sri Dev Nair thinks McDonald's will not give up so easily.

"The case has shown that McDonald's want to control the monopoly over the use of the prefix 'Mc' and it has a lot of money to be able to do this so many small restaurants just give in to them," he said.

"We expect them to challenge the ruling and we will be prepared to face them in court."

The US corporation can apply to have the case reviewed in the Federal Court, which is the court of last resort on the matter.

Suppiah says he does not hold any grudges.

"My children like eating at McDonald's so I will continue going there and I would like to invite the president of McDonald's worldwide to come here to McCurry's and have a dosai, on the house -- but we can't supersize it."

All Questions About Swine Flu

What is swine flu?
Influenza circulates regularly among humans and animals such as pigs and birds. Pigs are important because they are close genetically and physically to humans. Birds are important because they can transport viruses across great distances.

As the virus passes through these animals, it sometimes acquires different genetic characteristics that can make it more or less dangerous to human beings. Scientists have been warning for a long time that even though bird flu that’s been around in Asia for awhile is infecting mostly birds and occasionally infecting and killing human beings, there is always the possibility of a new virus that can cause serious disease. We have that now with swine flu.

People have no natural immunity to the new virus. If you’ve had flu shots in the past, it doesn’t matter. Nobody has had this virus before and that’s what makes it potentially so dangerous.

Things will keep popping up out of nature. We live in a global ecosystem that not only includes billions of other people, but hundreds of billions of animals. And we exchange viruses and new viruses do appear.

How is it detected?
Labs provide clear ID on swine flu by a specific test that has been developed. One of the things that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is doing that should speed up the process of identifying cases is getting test kits out to the state health departments. Right now, it can only be done in Atlanta. That’s why it often takes several days from the time a cases is suspected to the time until it is positively identified.

If someone got sick in April and they recovered, they don’t have to worry if it was swine flu or not.

If you’re over it, just be happy you’re fine.

Should I be worried?
The reason that we’re worried about swine flu is the people typically killed by flu are often the very old and frail, and sometimes the very young. Because of the deaths in Mexico, there are indications that swine flu might be able to strike and kill younger people — those in their 20s, 30s and 40s. In 1918, the ultimate pandemic we know about killed healthy young adults. That’s one of the reasons why this outbreak is potentially frightening. We still have to understand more.

The United States is already doing almost everything possible to track the spread of the virus, treat the victims and try to develop a vaccine.

Investigators from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating very actively, because a lot more needs to be understood about the deaths before we can understand the threat.

What can I do to keep from getting swine flu?
The authorities have talked about it again and again: Wash your hands often and cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze. That’s all really important in order to cut down the transmission of any infectious agent, particularly this one to which we have no natural immunity.

Antibacterial hand wash is excellent at eliminating the threat of flu and many other viruses and bacteria. These skin cleaners are basically just alcohol that has been put in an emulsifier to make it easier to apply and doesn’t dry your hands out. Health officials strongly recommend using it for swine flu. You can even use pure rubbing alcohol — it would have the same effect.

Masks sold over the counter provide minimal protection. Mostly they’re recommended for people working in hospitals or in laboratories. The virus can usually pass through them.

No previous flu shots provide any protection from this disease. No matter how many times in your life before that you’ve had the flu, that doesn’t provide any protection, either.

One reassuring thing is that we know now that many cases that have occurred in the U.S. have resulted in mild illness and people have recovered completely. Those who do are almost certainly immune to this virus in the future.

When should I seek medical treatment?
You should seek medical attention if have a fever of 102 or higher, or if you feel very sick. Swine flu has flu-like symptoms of lethargy or muscle aches or pains. If you have been to Mexico or in contact with someone who has recently been to Mexico and you get sick, you might want to seek it sooner. Again and again, public health officials emphasize that people shouldn’t be going to get medical attention just for the sniffles. That would swamp medical facilities and make it more difficult for people who actually need medical care for all kinds of reasons, not just swine flu.

Tamiflu and Relenza are drugs that are known to be effective against swine flu.

Preventive doses of Tamiflu can be used when there’s an infected case. It can be given to family members and that has been done.

But Tamiflu is not advised for the general population at all. The reasons for that is, if a lot of people start taking a drug, it’s very much like antibiotics — a resistant strain could appear and make the situation far more dangerous than it is.

Can you just let the virus run its course?
If someone is known to be infected, and they’re not feeling that bad, they can let it run its course. The advice we’ve gotten most consistently from public health officials about this is that people should go to the hospital, if they would normally go to the hospital. If they’re feeling so sick, then they should go because they can benefit from antiviral treatment. If they’re just feeling kind of crummy, they may or may not have swine flu.

Obviously, it’s a big problem that not everybody has a doctor. But reserve visits to emergency rooms for when you are really sick. There are drugs to treat this, if you start to have a very high fever that’s the time to go.

What does a "pandemic" really mean?
“Pandemic” is indeed a scary word. It means a global outbreak of an infection to which people have no resistance. Because of the raising of the phase level to 5, it would seem that we’re almost there. We have to keep in mind that it doesn’t say anything about the seriousness of the illness. There could be a pandemic of something that doesn’t cause a serious disease. We just don’t know yet the seriousness of this illness.

That’s why the raising of the phase level to 5 doesn’t affect the U.S. at all. It’s really a message to other countries to get ready because there is a very strong chance it will arrive on their shores. As the president said last night, we can’t stop it from coming here because it would be like closing the barn door after the horse is out. The virus is here already.

Is it better to get swine flu now?
It’s better to never get the flu if you can possibly avoid it. Even though there is a theoretical possibility that it could work in the future, it may not, and it could make you very sick. It’s not as if getting this is some picnic. You’re worried about a theoretical future of it being deadly and right now that’s just theoretical.

You wouldn’t want to get it on purpose, because you would further the chain of transmission and could pass it on to others.

Should I change my travel plans?
I can’t advise you what to do, but the state department is issuing recommendations about this and so is the Centers for Disease Control. I would advise you to read them very carefully and pay attention.

If someone is coming back from Mexico and if they start to feel sick at all, they should stay home. But the odds of getting swine flu are very slim. It’s not as if everyone who’s been to Mexico or even a significant percentage of people who have visited Mexico have ended up getting sick.

Are children at greater risk?
Every year during seasonal influenza in the U.S., a few children do die from the flu. Often they have underlying health conditions; sometimes they don’t. It’s usually not more than a handful each year, and it’s tragic when it does happen. But we don’t know yet whether this case is extraordinary or whether it’s something that’s going to bode badly for the future.

High fever, especially if it is increasing rapidly in a baby, is something you want to think about all the time. If your baby is sick enough to need medical attention in your opinion, you should take your baby to get medical attention and let the doctor worry about testing for swine flu.

Why are schools closing over unconfirmed cases?
We really don’t know how much this flu is going to spread, whether it will continue throughout the summer or whether it will die out as flu viruses normally do. Different communities take different actions depending on the preferences of the local officials. One of the things that will be interesting will be to see whether the places that closed their schools will have less of an outbreak than the places that didn’t when they had similar numbers [of infections.] Scientists are happy that different communities are taking different actions because it’s sort of an experiment in real time. It’ll tell us how to handle it better if it does come back next year, or does continue for a long time.

Are there risks to pregnancy?
Influenza can cause problems with pregnancy, and that’s something to speak about with your obstetrician. Although there’s no evidence yet that this swine flu presents more of a danger than regular influenza, you should talk to your doctor.

Are my pets at risk?
There is no evidence whatsoever of any risk for animals that has come up. The main problem with this is that it’s a virus that seems to have originated in pigs and became capable of infecting human beings. There are flu viruses that preferentially affect cats and dogs, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

How does a virus get started from a specific species?
This is something that’s been studied a lot. One of the reasons the flu is such a trouble for the human population around the world is that it is a virus that mutates constantly and it passes between different animal species — mostly between pigs and different kinds of bird and humans. As it mutates, it picks up genes from the different animals, which causes it to be more or less dangerous to humans. Birds help viruses move around the world, as well as human-to-human contact.

It’s a part of nature and it’s been going on for a long time. It’s a part of nature that becomes more of a factor as human populations increase, as factory farming increases and the number of animals increases in small spaces. It is part of the ecology of our modern world.

Can someone test negative for the swine flu and still be a carrier?
If someone was not showing symptoms, they would not be tested. But you can be a carrier and not know it.

Tips Mengajar Pencuri Telefon Bimbit

Baru2 ni saya ada terbaca kat internet tentang tips menjaga keselamatan telefon bimbit.
Bagaimana caranya? Ia sebenarnya sangat mudah.

Diet and Fitness

By The Editors of Women's Health
Trying to slim down but can't bear the thought of giving up your daily dish of dulce de leche fro-yo? No problem. Too much deprivation is bad for dieters — trimming more than 500 calories a day can slow down your metabolism and trigger cravings intense enough to sabotage even the most valiant weight-loss efforts, according to Cynthia Sass, R.D., coauthor of Your Diet Is Driving Me Crazy. So the only question is: How fast do you want to lose the weight? Whether your goal is to shed a pound a week (the amount you can lose if you cut 500 calories a day) or a pound a month (if you cut 100), we've got the tricks and tips you need to kiss those extra pounds goodbye — without kissing off cake.

To Lose 1 Pound Per Week
Dodge dining-out disasters
Even your seemingly healthy grilled swordfish and vegetables can pack more calories and fat than a stick of butter. "Many restaurant meals contain up to 2 ounces of added oil [500 calories]," says Anita Jones, founder of the Healthy Dining Program, which analyzes the nutritional content of restaurant food. Pasta dishes are notorious: Oil is used throughout the cooking process and added to sauces and cooked noodles. Stick with steamed veggies and grilled, poached, or broiled lean protein (like poultry and fish), and ask the chef to prepare your dishes without oil. Or just cook meals at home instead of eating out.

Careful With That Cappuccino
Vanilla shots, caramel, sugar packets — they're not harmless just because they're in your cup of joe. A large white-chocolate mocha with whipped cream from Starbucks logs in at 630 calories (the whip alone has 100!). Get your sweet fix with two shots of sugar-free vanilla syrup in a medium cappuccino with soy or fat-free milk and kick 500 empty calories to the curb.

Dress Down
"Most entrée salads at restaurants are pre-dressed with 6 to 10 tablespoons of dressing," Jones says. "And most dressings have 70 to 100 calories per tablespoon and 7 to 10 grams of fat." That's an average of 680 calories just for the dressing (let's not even get into croutons and bacon bits). Order dressing on the side and dip into it sparingly with your fork between bites — you'll cut back to about 2 tablespoons (roughly 175 calories).

Lighten Up At Happy Hour
If it tastes sweet or has a salty rim, it's usually bad news — think cosmos, lemon drops, and appletinis. Most cocktails have 2 to 5 ounces of liquor. Add in 5 ounces of sugary syrups or mixers like cola, grenadine, and Midori and you can down more than 700 calories in just one drink. Stay away from Margaritaville (and below 100 calories) by pairing your liquor with diet or club soda. Or go for a bottle of light beer or a 5-ounce glass of chardonnay, which contain around 125 calories each. Sorry, Jimmy.

To Lose 1 Pound Every 2 Weeks
Cut Out 300 Calories A Day

HERE'S HOW
Be Tricky In The Kitchen
For leaner cuisine — and to save 115 calories — swap out that tablespoon of olive oil for canola or olive oil cooking spray. Sauté vegetables and fish with 1/4 cup of broth rather than 1 tablespoon of butter and trim 100 more. Replace the quarter cup of heavy cream in Alfredo and cheese sauces with the same amount of skim milk mixed with 2 tablespoons of flour — bam, another 150.

Switch Dishes
The larger the serving dish, the more you're likely to consume, according to recent research in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Downsize your ice cream bowl and serve that fettuccine on a 9-inch appetizer plate instead of a standard 11-inch dish — you can save up to 300 calories in a day, says Jenna Anding, Ph.D., associate professor of nutrition and food science at Texas A&M University. Dining out? Cut your entreé in half and doggie-bag it as soon as your food arrives.

Skip The Sweet Swill
"One of the easiest ways to uncover hidden calories is to look at your beverage consumption," Sass says. American women get up to 300 more calories a day now than they did 30 years ago. At least half of those come from sweetened beverages like soda and fruit juice, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A 20-ounce bottle of Arizona Iced Tea has 240 calories — about as much as a small meal. Ditch the sports drinks, fruit punch, and Slurpees and get your produce nutrients from whole fruit instead of juice — a 1-pint carton of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice has 220 calories. An orange? About 35.

Pare Down Your PMS Picks
Forgo the cup of Ben & Jerry's for the same amount of low-fat ice cream. Slow-Churned Dreyer's Grand Light Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough has only 260 calories per cup. The B&J version? 540 calories. Yeah, we know that eating Ben & Jerry's is as close as any of us is likely to get to paradise on earth. So if you just can't live without the boys, mix 2 tablespoons into a cup of the skinnier stuff and you'll still save 250 calories.

To Lose 1 Pound Per Month
Cut Out 100 Calories A Day

HERE'S HOW
Buy Skinnier Bread
The calorie content in different brands can vary as wildly as Anna Nicole's "before" and "after" shots. For example, Milton's Healthy Whole Grain packs 90 calories a slice, while Sara Lee Delightful Wheat weighs in at just 45. Switch brands and you cut your sandwich calories by 90. Better yet, wrap your cold cuts in lettuce — a big leaf of romaine has only 10 calories.

Trade Up Your Toppings
Swap the half-cup of guacamole on your burrito for an equal amount of salsa and spare yourself 150 calories. Get the same savings by using salsa in place of the sour cream on your baked potato and the mayo on your wrap. Other tricks of the topping trade: Swap Gorgonzola for grated Parmesan, dip vegetables into hummus instead of ranch dressing, and sprinkle salads with lightly toasted pecans rather than oil-soaked croutons.

Turn Off The Tube
We know Laguna Beach reruns can be just as tempting as tiramisu, but too many hours in front of your plasma screen can wreak havoc on your waistline. Researchers from Georgia State University found that people took in up to 130 more calories on days when they ate in front of the TV than on days when they left the remote alone.

Spritz Up Your Vino
Mix 3 ounces of club soda with 3 ounces of wine and your drink will have about 60 calories. If you usually have two glasses of Shiraz, substituting the bubbly stuff will save you about 120 calories. An added bonus: Research shows that moderate drinking (one drink daily for women) may increase levels of leptin, a natural hormone that curbs the appetite for sweets.

Camouflage Your Candy
A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that office workers who kept candy within reach in a clear dish ate three times as much as those who kept it farther away in an opaque container. That's a 150-calorie difference. If you've gotta have a Godiva stash, make sure it's out of sight and that you have to work (at least a little) to get to it.

Bulk Up
Eating low-cal, fiber-rich foods before a meal — think fruits, vegetables, and broth-based soups — can help reduce your total calorie intake. A study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that women who ate a 100-calorie salad before their meal consumed 12 percent less — 107 fewer calories — overall (salad included) than those who skipped the leafy appetizer. Make your first course a cup of veggie soup or 2 cups of mixed salad with reduced-fat cheese and fat-free dressing. Now get chopping!

Raikkonen quickest in Malaysian practice

AP - Friday, April 3KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Kimi Raikkonen set the scene for a Ferrari comeback by setting the fastest time in practice Friday ahead of Sunday's Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix.

Raikonnen's time of 1 minute, 35.707 seconds in the afternoon session was faster than last year's pole-winning time set by teammate Felipe Massa, who was second quickest Friday, an eighth of a second behind.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, Williams' Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber of Red Bull followed the Ferrari pair.

Brawn drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, who finished 1-2 in last weekend's season-opening Australian GP, were sixth and seventh on the time sheets, ahead of Williams' Kazuki Nakajima.

Raikkonen's strong showing shook off doubts about the reliability of the Ferrari after a mishap in morning practice, when smoke began billowing into the cockpit and streaming from the rear of the car. Ferrari did not disclose the problem, amid reports of an overheating KERS energy storage device.

Ferrari qualified first and second for the Malaysian GP last year after a pointless season opener in Australia, and Friday's practice raised hopes of a repeat recovery after once again leaving Melbourne empty handed.

Rain threatened the Sepang circuit in the afternoon, but both morning and afternoon sessions were dry, preventing teams trying out their wet weather settings. This heightened the chances that they will go into Sunday's race _ with rain forecast _ without the benefit of acquainting themselves with a wet track.

Force India's Giancarlo Fisichella was the main casualty of the second practice, spearing off the track on the dual right-handers of turns 10 and 11, sideswiping the tire wall. It ended his session, but he walked away unhurt.

Rosberg set the fastest time in the morning practice, making it four straight practice sessions in which the German had topped the time sheets after the three at Melbourne last week.

Rosberg's time of 1 minute, 36.260 seconds was just four hundredths of a second quicker than teammate Nakajima.

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton's horror week _ after being stripped of his third place in Australia for misleading stewards in an inquiry _ continued when the McLaren driver was fined 1,200 ($1,600) for breaching the pit lane speed limit during morning practice.

Malaysia's Najib sworn in as new prime minister

AFP - Friday, April 3KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - Najib Razak was sworn in as Malaysia's sixth prime minister Friday, assuming charge of reuniting the fractured ruling party and steering the nation through the global economic downturn.

He took the oath of office in front of the Malaysian king at a ceremony at the palace broadcast live on national television.

The planned transfer of power follows the resignation Thursday of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who analysts say failed to live up to his promises during six unremarkable years in office.

"I, Najib Razak, who has been chosen to hold the post of prime minister, swear that I will carry out the responsibilities which I have been entrusted with to the best of my ability" the 55-year-old said.

"I will be true to Malaysia and will defend and uphold the constitution."

A religious official then read several verses from the Koran to pray for a successful leadership.

Najib's accession to the premiership completes a transition triggered by elections last year when the ruling United Malays National Organisation party (UMNO) slumped to its worst ever performance.

Abdullah, who was widely criticised as weak and ineffective, agreed several months ago to step down amid the fallout from those elections, which reshaped Malaysia's political landscape.

When he first came into office Abdullah pledged sweeping reforms including tackling corruption -- seen as endemic both in the ruling party and society at large.

In the end, he was punished at the ballot box last year for not making good on those promises, when the opposition won an unprecedented one third of seats in parliament and seized control of five states.

Najib, who wsa Abdullah's deputy and finance minister, became president of UMNO last week at its annual assembly, which was dominated by debate on how to overhaul the party and reclaim popular support.

According to Malaysian political tradition, the party leader takes on the country's premiership at the head of the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional coalition.

Najib, the 55-year-old son and nephew of two former prime ministers, has said he will focus on uniting the multi-racial nation after ethnic minorities shifted to the opposition in the 2008 polls.

Malaysia's population is dominated by Muslim Malays, and among the ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities there is some sense that their rights are being eroded as the nation becomes increasingly "Islamised."

Najib also faces the challenge of cushioning the country's economy from the impact of the global economic crisis, which has sparked the loss of more than 26,000 jobs here since the beginning of the year.

Last month he unveiled a stimulus package worth 16.2 billion dollars, but has warned that Malaysia's export-driven economy could shrink by 1.0 percent this year despite the massive spending.

However, analysts say that before he can begin to tackle these issues, he must first clear the air over opposition allegations linking him to the murder in 2006 of the mistress of his close aide -- a Mongolian woman whose body was blown up with military-grade explosives.

He has also been forced to reject corruption allegations as well as charges that his administration would adopt hardline tactics, including the detention of its opponents, under tough internal security laws.

Malaysia's Najib 1 step away from premier's post

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia's deputy prime minister was formally elected chief of the ruling party Thursday, bringing him a step closer to taking over the government despite accusations that he will intensify a crackdown on dissent.

In a carefully choreographed power transition, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was elected unopposed as president of the United Malays National Organization, the largest component in the ruling National Front coalition.

The post automatically gives Najib, 55, the job of the prime minister, which he will inherit next week from the moderate Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who spent a largely ineffective 5 1/2 years in office.

Critics within the ruling party blamed Abdullah's attempts to provide more political and press freedoms in the country for the party's disastrous showing in last year's general elections.

Najib's ascent to power has been accompanied by an increased government crackdown on opponents. In recent days, it banned two opposition newspapers and police broke up a rally by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim with tear gas.

"Malaysians view with great shock the signals that the incoming Najib Razak administration is giving ... as he prepares to assume power," said Tian Chua, the chief spokesman of Anwar's People's Justice Party.

"The harsh clampdown on media freedoms and the right to assemble ... suggest that severe repressive measures may be the hallmark of Najib's ascendancy to the premiership," Chua said.

On Thursday, Abdullah warned that the party will perish if it continues with its old autocratic ways.

"Sadly, there are still those who feel that we do not need to pursue reforms," Abdullah said in a speech to the party's annual congress before elections for office bearers in which Najib was elected.

"They believe that UMNO will regain its glory if we revert to the old ways ... by restricting the freedom of our citizens and by silencing their criticism," Abdullah said. "It is a path that I fear will hasten our demise."

UMNO, whose membership is open only to the majority Malays, leads the National Front coalition that has governed Malaysia since 1957. For the first time in 40 years, the Front failed to get a two-thirds majority in Parliament and also ceded control of five of Malaysia's 13 states to the opposition in the March 2008 elections.

Much of the voter anger was directed at UMNO, whose leaders are widely perceived as corrupt and power-hungry. The party is also accused of subverting the judiciary, the police force, the bureaucracy and of discriminating against the Chinese and Indian minorities.

Abdullah faced calls to step down immediately after the elections but made a deal with party bosses to stay on for a year before handing over to Najib, the son of Malaysia's second prime minister.

The suave and articulate Najib's reputation is marred by controversies. He has been accused of corruption, including an alleged shady deal to purchase French submarines when he was defense minister.

Najib denies the allegations, which have dominated blogs and Internet postings by Malaysian activists. The mainstream media are government controlled and do not report sensitive matters.

Najib, who has a degree in economics from a British university, will also have to grapple with an economy that is heading for recession despite a US$16 billion stimulus package that he announced earlier this month. Malaysia's central bank said Wednesday it expects exports _ the main pillar of the economy _ will fall by a quarter this year.
